I've decided to go ahead and read my first book about a child with Aspergers. I don't usually like to read books about Aspergers because not only do they make me feel self conscious, but I feel like I'm reading something I already know. I didn't want to read the book The Curious Case of The Dog In The Night, I didn't like the movie Mozart and the Whale, and the main reason I liked the movie Temple Grandin was because it let others EXPERIENCE what Autism is like, from an autistic point of view.
But this book, Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine is a children's book. It's also written from the point of view of a child with Aspergers, though I do believe it's fiction. After really scrutinizing every detail about the book I could possibly not like, I've decided I want to try and read this one. I want to be able to give people a book to read that I can agree with. One written by someone who DOESN'T have Aspergers, but seems to understand what it's like. That's the amazing part. How can someone who doesn't live the diagnosis understand so well? I guess I will have to find out JUST how well this author understands.
I also want to read it, because someone I babysit for owns this book, and also knows I have Aspergers. Maybe I can help this person to understand me even better by discussing this book with them.
